Cosmic by Frank Cotrell Boyce

A lovely story about Dads that brought tears to my eyes at the end (not sure if it was supposed to do that ...). A good Father's Day present perhaps for the biggest boy in the family (but only if he likes children's books and astronauts, I suppose!).

Another uplifting book that I have really enjoyed reading today. And now I have some grittier ones to get back to ...

The Carbon Diaries 2017 by Saci Lloyd

Laura Brown's family survived the first big London flood - just - but two years later and the situation has deteriorated seriously - and throughout Europe. Can Laura keep the dirty angels together? Can she keep them alive? Can they overcome the Government?

Not quite as good as the first Diaries, perhaps a bit too extreme in places, but it certainly helps the reader to understand the situation facing many refugees throughout the world, and for that, a worthwhile book.

The Carbon Diaries 2015 by Saci Lloyd

Just realised that I've missed out two books I've read recently. The Carbon Diaries are set in the not too distant future when climate change has become even more problematic and the Government has decided to take drastic steps. Everyone has a carbon card - you can only use so much carbon per month, and if you use up your ration, well, no more transport, hot water or electricity for you until the end of the year. Of course, there is a black market, and the stress of loving more simply causes a lot of friction within the family, but eventually the community pulls together - but what will happen when London is flooded?

Framed by Frank Cottrell Boyce

After all the "bleak" books I have read recently (even though they have been very enjoyable, full of escapism and occasional humour) it has been a pleasant if light change to read Framed last night and this morning. This book was also shortlisted for the Whitbread Award and the Carnegie Medal in 2006, and it is easy to see why - a feelgood book, easy to read, but with a deep theme. I really enjoyed the references to famous works of art throughout the book and the way they were able to transform a small Welsh town. And I must go and look up Manod now ...

Skinner's Festival by Quintin Jardine

Yes, another Bob Skinner book! The second one in the series. And another corker. Very gruesome. But great to read about Edinburgh, and I can imagine the scenes he describes of Princes' Street Gardens during the Festival. Role on book number 3!

When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr

One of my favourite picture books growing up was The Tiger that came to Tea. But I was not aware that Judith Kerr was in fact a German refugee, or that she had written a children's book based on her experiences. I'm so happy that I picked up this book to read at the Imperial War Museum (highly recommended museum, by the way!). A great story, well written, with poignant moments but lots of love as well. An exciting adventure story, all the more amazing as it is based on real life.

Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness

And so I quickly came to the final installment. Monsters of Men is another one of the short listed books for the Carnegie Medal. In act, I've just checked and discovered that it is 2011's very worthy winner. (I'm glad I read it first without knowing that!)

This has been a truly fantastic series. There is so much fantasy and yet so much realism within the story of Todd and Viola. The characters, which include animals as well as different types of beings, are clearly drawn and every incident shines vividly within the imagination. I have lost myself in these books. I have escaped - if "escaped" is the right word to describe journeying to a land where women are branded, where animals talk, where everyone is caught up in a war and has to make life and death decisions, where you are at a risk of being controlled without your knowledge.

What an imagination Patrick Ness has. And how good of him to share it with the rest of us.

The Ask and the Answer by Patrick Ness

And so the "Chaos Walking" trilogy continues ... images of holocaust, genocide, war, terrorism ... one of my overriding thoughts was, if we had not had World War Two, and other terrorist events and wars, would this seem unbelievable? And what is so shocking and sad is that, while reading of the horrifying events, they don't seem as unbelievable and incomprehensible as they should, because equivalents have happened.

A moving way of helping young people understand the atrocities of war and life in war-torn countries. A shocking indictment on the human race. A beautifully written story of love and hope in a hopeless, bleak situation.

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

With Monsters of Men being another of the Carnegie Medal Short Listers, I thought I'd better attempt the whole trilogy. As they were such thick books, I thought that this could take me a while. How wrong I was.

I remember hearing good things about this book when it was first published a couple of years ago. And it more than lived up to its reputation. With a talking dog, and a town where you can hear everyone's thoughts, the last boy in town is looking forward to becoming a man ... until he senses ... silence. An exciting story, you follow Todd and Viola through all sorts of struggles, adventures and misadventures, until you reach what you hope will be - hope. But will they make it through? I never looked so forward to reading the next book before!

The Bride's Farewell by Meg Rosoff

Another Carnegie Short Lister, this was a much more romantic book to read after the darkness of my other more recent reads. Although there are difficulties faced by Pell in the book, the tone is lighter and more hopeful. An enjoyable book, and I did appreciate the lighter read.

Out of Shadows by Jason Wallace

My librarian suggested that I should read some of the Carnegie Medal nominees, and this was the first one I tried. Set in Zimbabwe shortly after the Civil War, the main character, Robert, is sad to be sent to boarding school and finds it hard to settle in. He gets involved with the wrong set of friends. An intriguing and desperately sad story, as the issues of the Civil War surrounding race and ruling assert themselves in the school. This dark and hard-hitting book asks you to contemplate that which you do not want to think about, as it makes you wonder if you should sometimes agree with the enemy, the bully, for the sake of the greater good.

The Butterfly Tattoo by Philip Pullman

Quite a sad story, and bleak. Pullman is a fine writer, and this is a good book, but suffers perhaps from a lack of hope and surfeit of disappointment. To clarify, the main character, Chris, eventually suffers from this, the book itself does not suffer. But it does make it sad to read.

I read this back in May, but I am a bit behind with my reviews so am trying to catch up now. Hence I do not have the immediacy that you might expect!

A Rush of Blood by Quintin Jardine

I can't quite decide who my favourite detective is: Bob Skinner or Cetin Ikmen. I love the familiarity of Edinburgh, Fife and Tayside brought to me by Jardine, and I love the exoticness and heat of Istanbul that Nadel's fiction inhabits. Each series has a plethora of interesting and involving characters, whose private lives provide much of the interest. I have read both series out of order, so I have discovered that some characters have divorced, remarried or died, then have read stories from their earlier days where they have yet to meet the loves of their lives, or the criminal insider or such. A Rush of Blood is Quintin Jardine's latest book, and long may they continue. An interesting point - at one point, a policewoman reads a book called "Inhuman Remains", about a female detective - this is one of another Jardine series, a small injoke, which I liked.

Anyway, I am looking forward to reading more about Bob Skinner's past as I am intrigued by some of his present circumstances!

Here is the list so far, with links (hopefully!) to other books of his that I have reviewed (unfortunately not as many as I would have liked!) (If you know me, please feel free to send me more of these unread books!!):

Skinner's Rules (2nd read)
Skinner's Festival (4th read)
Skinner's Trail
Skinner's Round
Skinner's Ordeal
Skinner's Mission
Skinner's Ghosts
Murmuring the Judges
Gallery Whispers
Thursday Legends
Autographs in the Rain
Head Shot
Fallen Gods (1st read)
Stay of Execution
Lethal Intent
Dead and Buried
Death's Door
Aftershock
Fatal Last Words
A Rush of Blood (3rd read)

The Secret Adversary by Agatha Christie

Another great Christie thriller, and yet another with non-familiar characters (although Inspector Japp is mentioned a couple of times). Tommy and Tuppence are Young Adventurers, and what an adventure they get caught up in. Kept me guessing right to the end - every time it seemed to be one person, I decided it was the other, and kept on changing my mind with each new clue or revelation. Fun!

The Pale Horse by Agatha Christie

Just right for the holidays, a good Agatha Christie murder mystery! And this one has an element of the supernatural thrown in for good measure. Not a Poirot or Miss Marple inside though - here the story is told by Mark Easterbrook and also features Detective-Inspector Lejeune. Bought from Waterstone's Secondhand Section for £1.50, started yesterday and finished this morning (I love holidays!), this represents very good value for money! And I have another one for this evening ...

Belshazzar's Daughter by Barbara Nadel

I woke up early this morning, eventually decided to open my eyes and start reading. Started reading at 8.30am. Eventually finished the book and got up to have a shower at 2.30pm. That's what holidays are all about! Great books! This is the first book in the Inspector Ikmen series. Roll on the rest!

The Secret Countess by Eva Ibbotson

Delighted to return to one of my favourite children's authors. Yet another book that pulls you in and makes you feel for the characters. Nice touch of romance, a dash of mystery and a much looked forward to denouement. I spent a few hours lying on my bed reading this, didn't want to do any more work until I'd finished!

No and Me - Delphin de Vigan

This was one of my Mum's book club reads. A reflective story of homelessness, friendship and the fact that we cannot truly understand the lives of others. A quiet read.

Skinner's Rules by Quintin Jardine

It's been a while since I read a Quintin Jardine book. This is one of the earlier ones. Great to read stories set in Edinburgh and other parts of Scotland. Good story with great characters. Must get another one!

HIVE: Zero Hour by Mark Walden

Well worth waiting for, can't wait for the next one now! Love reading about Otto Malpense and his friends. This one had a bit of an unexpected turn - well, two really. Look forward to finding out what happens next!

HIVE: Rogue by Mark Walden

At last, I was able to borrow Rogue from the school library! Otto on the dark side - not good! But a great story, once again! Now I just need to get my hands on Zero Hour ...

Pretty Dead Things by Barbara Nadel

Barbara Nadel's Inspector Ikmen series often seem to deal with, or perhaps rather refer to, necrophilia, and this book is no exception. However, this book also deals with the hippy past of some of the characters that live in Istanbul, and is another gripping read. It only took me a couple of days to make my way through this story.

Petrified by Barbara Nadel

A perfectly preserved body is found in a room with a dead old woman. What is going on? Another great read with Inspector Ikmen, this time based mainly in Istanbul, with the story taking place before Dance with Death. I am enjoying this series, even though I'm reading them in the wrong order!

Dance with Death by Barbara Nadel

What I really enjoyed about this murder mystery was that it was set in Turkey, particularly in the evocative landscapes of Cappadoccia. It features a Turkish inspector, Cetin Ikmen, his family, friends and colleagues, and a number of investigations. Quite unusual and very readable. I am now reading another one of the series.

The Other Side of You by Salley Vickers

A psychological tale of lost loves, secrets, guilt, suicide attempts and understanding. 9/10. Beautifully written. Set partly in Rome, and dealt with Carvaggio and the art world, which was interesting.

An Expert in Murder by Nicola Upson

What a fun novel, even though very dark with many twists. It is set in the London theatre world, with set-up murders, clues, theatrical characters and a playwright, Josephine Tey. I would enjoy reading another story in this series.

HIVE: Dreadnought by Mark Walden

I love reading about Otto Malpense and his villainous friends. Another great story, featuring a new spaceship which has been hijacked.

I have to confess that I haven't updated for a while - sorry that these are not more thoughtful reviews / reflections!

The Diamond Takers (The Lady Violet Mysteries No. 3) by Karen Wallace

A good read, if a quick one, and, presumably as I am older than the intended audience, I managed to work out what was going on quite early in the story. However, that did not spoil the enjoyment of this book that I practically read cover to cover on the first day of my holidays! What a fun way to start the week!

The Time Machine - HG Wells

At last! I always enjoyed the film, and now, finally reading this novella, I could picture the film as I read the story ... particularly the scene where the Time Traveller rushes through the years watching the tailor's dummy change fashions. Which is not mentioned in the book ... the rushing years are mentioned, not the dummy. Anyway, I'm glad to have finally read and enjoyed this book!

Maps for Lost Lovers by Nadeem Aslam

Another magical journey through a Pakistani community, this time one based in Britain in the 1970s or so. A sad story, or rather a collection of sad stories, of loves lost, stolen, destroyed, misunderstood, of families at loggerheads, of marriages complicated and confused. An insightful view into a community of closed and off limits, sharing passions and heartaches. Highly recommended, beautifully written.

Season of the Rainbirds by Nadeem Aslam

This is was also quite bleak in some ways, but in a much lighter and more poetic way. Nineteen years ago a train crashed, and three bags of post have only just been discovered. The running thread through the book is wondering how these newly discovered letters might affect the community, but there are already enough intrigues in this small village in Pakistan, and political unrest in the rest of the country, to cause disruption to lives. A very picturesque book.

(There is also an ongoing "other" story between the main action, that I think I'd need to revisit to fully understand. Was it one of the lost letters? Or the history of one of the characters?)

A mysterious book, then, like the ending.

Some Kind of Black by Diran Adebayo

I think "gritty realism" best describes this one. Dele is studying in Oxford, but on a trip home to London is roughed up by the police, along with his sister, Dapo, and friend, Concrete. His sister goes into a coma, and the resulting benefit gigs see Dele come into contact with a variety of gangsters and ne'er-do-wells.

This is a book about growing up black in North London in the 90s. Insightful; perhaps a bit too bleak for me at times, though.

The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver

My second book of the year? This has been a substantial friend, travelling back and forth with me on my commute, revealing its secrets slowly, opening my eyes to its history and making me ask questions, learning more, wanting to find out more. I have enjoyed every bit of it, and am only sad not to enjoy its friendship more now that it is finished. It has left a lacuna in my journey ...

Toast by Nigel Slater

Yum!

It's taken me a while to read this - I'm sure it's over a year since a colleague lent this to me, I'll need to work out how to get it back now! - but it has not disappointed!

I don't think I've ever read a book that made me salivate so much!! The descriptions of food were sublime, many of the settings and attitudes (particularly early on) so familiar. Made me think back to my favourite foods, the comfort foods of growing up, the "posh, fancy food" of restaurants.

If you like food, and grew up in the seventies and early eighties, you'll surely love this.

Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger

Turned into more of a ghost story than I had imagined. Nice. A few twists, some that I could see coming, but a couple that caught me out a bit. Read most of it today - lovely to spend an hour in the bath and an hour in bed last night with a book, then a couple of hours this morning before I had to get up and get on with things. My first book of the year, and a good one. Don't think it's quite as good as The Time Traveler's Wife though ... but I did enjoy the fact it's set in London, and it has made me want to go and explore Highgate Cemetery, and my own local cemetery, more. Maybe tomorrow. When it's not raining.

So. What have I read this year?

Children's books - 17
Poetry - 1
Short stories - 6
Non-fiction - 1
International - 6
Crime/mystery/suspense - 8 (I think, debateable I suppose!)
Men - 15
Women - 22

Three books by Siobhan Dowd, two anthologies by Roald Dahl, two more in the HIVE series by Mark Walden, two more by Isabel Allende.

Think what is particularly interesting is that I've had quite a tough working year; whilst I'm still travelling on public transport, I've been spending more time marking and less time reading. Also, there have been many times I've been to see the school librarian and simply said, I need something easy that will transport me quickly but not need too much thought, hence lots of children's books and more short stories than normal. I haven't read too many biographies this year; in fact it appears I have only read one non fiction book this year, about Sandra Laing in South Africa.

Next year I hope to read a bit more non-fiction, and some longer novels. I got a couple of great books for Christmas - I hope to read them now and write reviews soon; I also have a couple of good non-fiction books that I need to finish! So, this time next year then for our review of 2011?
